Muchas veces me preguntan sobre el proceso que sigo al hacer una foto. Cómo surge una idea, dónde he conocido a la modelo o cómo he iluminado suelen ser preguntas frecuentes. Mi madre también me suele preguntar que cuándo voy a quitar los palos (trípodes en idioma materno) del pasillo y que por qué armo tanto jaleo para hacer una foto si ella luego coge el móvil hace pinpan y quedan fenomenal. Bueno, dejando las preguntas de mi santa madre a un lado, este post trata de responder a todo esto a partir de mi última foto. Aquí la tenéis:
Yo todavía no había terminado de retocar mis anteriores fotos cuando me escribió Hanna (la modelo de la foto). Se puso en contacto conmigo a través de modelmayhem (para el que no lo conozca es una web cojonuda donde encontrar modelos, maquilladores, fotógrafos etc..) diciéndome que tenía unos días libres en Madrid y que si quería hacer una foto con ella. Nada más ver su perfil yo ya estaba seguro de querer fotografiarla.
Hanna es una modelo finlandesa con unos rasgos muy particulares, tiene una belleza muy especial que me pareció genial. Le respondí que si, que pensaría una idea para ella. Estuve fijándome en sus fotos para ver qué expresiones reforzaban sus rasgos, qué tipo de peinados podían funcionar con ella, qué transmitía con la mirada…toda esa información es muy útil a la hora de pensar un concepto que tiene que encajar con la modelo que tienes disponible.
Hanna es una modelo finlandesa con unos rasgos muy particulares, tiene una belleza muy especial que me pareció genial. Le respondí que si, que pensaría una idea para ella. Estuve fijándome en sus fotos para ver qué expresiones reforzaban sus rasgos, qué tipo de peinados podían funcionar con ella, qué transmitía con la mirada…toda esa información es muy útil a la hora de pensar un concepto que tiene que encajar con la modelo que tienes disponible.
Teniendo en cuenta toda esta información comencé a imaginar fotos para ella. La verdad que la inspiración me viene cada vez de una forma distinta, aunque hay ciertos factores que suelen mantenerse constantes como la música, el deporte, charlas con amigos… Ya hablaré de todo eso en otro post porque en verdad la inspiración es un tema que merece su propio espacio. En fin, la idea que me vino a la mente estaba relacionada con la protección, con el instinto maternal, con el miedo a perder algo y con la sensación de impotencia que tienes cuando ves cómo lo pierdes. Ya sabía desde el principio que quería transmitir todo eso de una forma muy limpia y visual, así que el concepto nació de la mano de la estética de la foto.
La estética me parece tan importante como el concepto, por eso siempre busco un gran impacto visual en mis imágenes. Quería a la modelo pintada de blanco casi perdida en un espacio del mismo color. Sin llegar a tener una imagen en blanco y negro sólo quería color en sus ojos y un poco de tonalidad de carne en ciertas partes del cuerpo (como el interior de su boca).
Sus brazos estarían llenos de huevos blancos que tendrían un fuerte peso simbólico, siendo casi los hijos a los que debía proteger. Esos huevos también nos darían sensación de fragilidad, y por lo tanto acentuarían esa necesidad de protección.
Quería un maquillaje muy marcado en los ojos para que los resaltase y que de alguna manera muy sutil nos acercasen a un ave. Realmente nos puede recordar a un ave gracias a que también tiene huevos entre los brazos, puesto que si viésemos ese mismo maquillaje pero sin los huevos seguramente nunca diríamos que parece un pájaro! Es un ejemplo de cómo todos los elementos de una foto se van apoyando los unos a los otros para llegar a construir la estética y el significado final. Lo importante es que todos los elementos trabajen en una misma dirección y tengan cierta coherencia entre si.

En cuanto a la luz, tenía muy claro que quería algo muy suave y envolvente, apenas sin sombras pero si con algo de direccionalidad.
Con toda está idea en la cabeza hablé con Hanna y, aunque no le conté todo porque me gusta dejar la sesión un poco abierta, le gustó. Entonces ya podía empezar a preparar la foto. Podéis ver la preparación, el maquillaje y la iluminación en un pequeño making of de la sesión:

I'm frequently asked about the process that I usually make when I take a picture. How I get the idea, where I've met the model, how I've lit… My mother also asks me when I'm going to remove all that "sticks" (tripods in my mother's language) out of the corridor and why I'm making such a mess for just one picture. Ok, leaving on a side my mom's questions, this post tries to answer all the other questions using my last photograph:
I was finishing the post production of my last series when Hanna (the model) wrote me through Modelmayhem (if you do not know it, it's a great website where you can find models, makeup artists, photographers…). She told me that she had a few free days in Madrid and she would like to have a photo-shoot with me. A quick view of her profile made me sure I wanted to photograph her.
Hanna is a finnish model with an amazing look, she had a very special beauty. I answered that it would be great to have a session, and that I was going to think an idea for her. I took a deep look at her pictures to see which expressions worked the best with her face, which kind of hairstyles may fit in her look, what does her eyes transmit….all that information is very useful when you want to think of a concept for a specific model.

Having in mind all of that I started to imagine the photo. Inspirations never comes in the same way, but they usually are certain things that help me, like listening to music, playing sports or chating with some friends. Inspiration is a very interesting subject so I think it deserves a whole post for it. Ok, back to the picture, the idea that comes to me was related to protection, maternal instinct, the fear of losing something important and the impotence you feel when you can't do anything to avoid it. From the very beginning I knew I wanted to tell this story in a very visual and clear way.
The aesthetic of my pictures has the same value than the concept. It's very important for me to create pictures with a powerful visual impact. I wanted the model painted all white in a white room. I just wanted color in her eyes and a little bit of flesh tone in some parts of her body (i.e inside her mouth).
She would have her arms full of white eggs that will have a strong symbolic meaning, being like the sons she must protect. Those eggs are fragile, so they intensify the fact that they need protection.
I wanted a very strong makeup in her eyes to highlight them and to give her a subtle birdish look. She looks like a bird not only for the makeup but for of the eggs, because if we take the eggs out maintaining the eye makeup, you could never say she look's like a bird!! It's an example of how every element in a picture supports the others to build the final meaning and aesthetic. It's important to have all the elements working in the same direction and in a coherent way.

Speaking of lighting, it was very clear for me that the picture would need soft and surrounding light, barely without shadows but marking the light's direction.
With all those thoughts in my head I spoke to Hanna and, even I didn't told her everything because I like to keep the session open, she liked it. Then I was able to prepare the photo.
